But what is a peculiar experience? Isn't the absence of an experience an experience? Yes but we don't call the absence of a feeling a feeling or the absence of pain a pain. It is certainly sometimes misleading to say: “Not the presence of something characterizes this case but the absence of something”. But when we are inclined to look out for a sensation it makes sense to point out that in such & such a case we don't find a peculiar sensation but we do in the opposite case. |
